How do I create a crossword puzzle?

Type one word and its clue per line in the format WORD | clue text (or WORD: clue). Click Generate and the tool will automatically arrange the words into an interlocking crossword grid with numbered across and down clues.

What format should my word list be in?

Accepted Answer

Use one entry per line. Separate the word from the clue with a pipe (|), colon (:) or hyphen (-). For example: PYTHON | A popular programming language named after a snake. Words should be 3+ letters and share letters with at least one other word to form intersections.

Can I print the crossword?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Click Print to send the puzzle to your printer. You can also toggle between the empty puzzle (with numbers only) and the solved version using the Show answers link.

Why didn't all my words fit?

Accepted Answer

The generator places words greedily by length. If a word has no matching letter with the existing grid, it is skipped. Try reordering your list (longest first) or adding words that share common letters like E, A, R, S, T.
