What are CSS named colors?

CSS named colors are a set of 148 human-readable color keywords defined by the W3C. They include the basic 17 (red, blue, green, etc.), 'extended' historical colors from X11 (like papayawhip or blanchedalmond), and modern additions (rebeccapurple, added in CSS Color Level 4 in 2014). You can use them in any CSS property that accepts a color, including color, background, border, box-shadow and gradient.

Should I use named colors or HEX/RGB?

Named colors are quick to type and easier to remember (tomato, skyblue, limegreen). HEX (#FF6347) is more precise and works everywhere. RGB/RGBA adds alpha transparency. For production CSS, HEX/RGB is most common. For prototyping or quick styling, named colors save time.

Are CSS named colors case-sensitive?

No. CSS is case-insensitive for color keywords. 'Tomato', 'tomato' and 'TOMATO' all refer to the same color. The convention is lowercase, and that's what the spec recommends.
